North Rift Leaders Pledge to Cease Hostilities After Nadome Killings

Leaders from the recently troubled North Rift area in a rare spectacle put aside differences and held a meeting aimed at uniting the warring communities that have seen the killing of residents in different areas.

Deputy president William Ruto, Thursday led the leaders as they sought to find a lasting solution to the deadly cattle raids.

The meeting comes in the wake of mass killing in different parts of the region over pastures and during livestock raids, with the most recent being raids in Nadome, that saw over 50 people die.

The leaders who met in the DP's office at Karen, Nairobi were mainly from Turkana, West Pokot, Samburu and Baringo Counties and comprised of Governors Simon Kachapin (West Pokot), Benjamin Cheboi (Baringo), Josephat Nanok and Moses Lenolkulal (Samburu).

Also in attendance, were Senators John Lonyangapuo (West Pokot), John Munyes (Turkana) and Gideon Moi (Baringo).

Other leaders who attended the high powered meeting include Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery, Principal Secretary Monica Juma, Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet,Rift Valley Regional Coordinator Osman Warfa and County Commanders from the region.

According to Capital FM, the leaders agreed on certain peace keeping resolutions which include convening peace meetings starting Monday, and finding ways of resolving the main source of conflict in the area which is pastoral boundaries and cattle rustling.

They promised to desist from making inflammatory remarks and work with religious leaders to bring peace and harmony among the communities.

The leaders asked the government to establish a ministry dedicated to handling matters cattle rustling, recruit and deploy Kenya Police Reservists to the area and set up infrastructure aimed at bringing development in the areas.

While encouraging them to work together in uniting their people, Deputy President William Ruto promised the North Rift leaders, that the government would deploy more security leaders on the ground to enhance security.
