Not Cervical Cancer, Abortion is the New Killer Among Women in Kenya

About 2600 women die every year in Kenya, a number that is way above those killed by cervical cancer.

Acccording to World Health Organisation's Human Papillomamavirus (HPV) Information Centre, last year 2451 women died from cervical cancer in the country.

Reports now indicate that not only does abortion take the lives of 2600 women and girls but also wounds thousands of others.

The Ministry of Health released a report that revealed about half a million abortions are done in Kenya annually with an esimated 375,000 carried out by nonprofessionals.

Dr. Joachim Osur a renowned reproductive health expert says that the demand for abortion has enhanced a network of illicit and deadly abortion services.

What's even more shocking is that the network based on referrals involves a number of agents including schoolgirls, their mothers, policemen, midwives, herbalists and other health practitioners.

A study conducted by African Population and Health Research Centre (APHRC)has established that 43 per cent of pregnant women today do not want pregnancy hence they opt to get rid of them in the back street clinics which often turn fatal.

The abortion subject remains very contentious in Kenya with opposing factions pulling from either side as critical steps to protect the lives of women in Kenya is a priority for the government.

Abortion is largely illegal in the country; however, the constitution only allows when a mother's life is in danger and has to be procured by a professional.
