Nyandarua Governor Daniel Waithaka has spoken on claims that he launched a Sh2 Million Christmas tree ahead of the festive season.
Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, Director of the Governor's Press Service Eliud Miring'u, stated that the tree unveiled in Ol Kalou town was worth Sh10,000 only.
Miring'u dismissed allegations that the tree had cost millions insisting that it was not practically possible to purchase a Sh2 Million tree.
“That Christmas tree is not worth more than Sh10,000. That is what we spent. How can you buy a tree for Sh2 Million?” questioned Miring'u.
On Tuesday, photos of the governor lighting up the tree were circulated on social media with reports indicating that the county had spent Sh2 Million for the event.
Many expressed dismay that the County had splashed such a huge amount of money on a matter that some termed as trivial.
In the ceremony held on Monday, Mwangi launched the “Governor's Christmas Tree” urging residents to assist the poor and not make merry when others in the society suffer.
''You should make it your duty to assist the less fortunate members of society by giving whatever you can instead of engaging in excessive behaviour,'' asserted the Governor.
The event was witnessed by hundreds of Ol Kalou town residents who cheered the Governor for helping in the lighting up of the streets through a partnership with the national government.
