National Youth Service officers on Thursday morning began opening up drainage systems within Nairobi estates in an effort to help ease the ongoing flooding and its repercussions in the city.

On Wednesday Devolution CS Ann Waiguru announced that 10,000 National Youth Service officers will be deployed to Nairobi to help city residents deal with the aftermath of the heavy downpour.

The floods have caused massive loss of lives and property in the city. Some residents spent upto 10 hours on the roads on Monday and Tuesday after roads became impassable and caused massive traffic snarl ups in the city.

Nairobi governor Evans Kidero apologized to residents for the situation saying the county government was working with the meteorological department, and will advise residents accordingly in the coming days.
The Star reports that the government has set aside KSh50 million to be used to clear clogged drainage channels and re-construct roads that have been destroyed.
