ODM Executive Director Oduor Ong'wen Assaulted by Rowdy Supporters

Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Executive Director Oduor Ong’wen was on Wednesday beaten, roughed up and his trouser torn apart by rowdy supporters at Orange House.

Ong'wen was attacked by Nominated Senator Elizabeth Ongoro's "army of supporters" who stormed the party headquarters over an alleged plot to bar Ongoro from vying for the Ruaraka Parliamentary seat.

The supporters accused Ong'wen of skewing the nominations to favour some candidates and dash the ambitions of others. The irate group also accused the party of favouring incumbent Ruaraka MP Tom Kajwang.

The Senator stormed the party offices to complain that she was being unfairly blocked from vying, following violence between her supporters and those of Kajwang in Mathare last month.

“I had travelled and, while I was away, I heard in the media that I had defected and my competitor Kajwang’ had been given a direct nomination certificate, I said I won’t comment…I had to come here to seek an explanation from the party,” Ongoro mentioned.

Though the party explained that there had been no direct nomination in Ruaraka, Ms Ongoro still insisted that she had been sidelined.

The chaos caused a lot of tension forcing riot police to step in and quell the commotion. The police fired twice in the air to scare away the mob a situation that forced the Inspector General of police Joseph Boinett to issue a stern warning of severe consequences to those who perpetrate violence in the lead up to the August 8 General Election.
