Officials Stealing Money Allocated to Senior Citizens

The Senate Labour Committee, chaired by Kilifi Senator Stewart Madzayo has learned that the funds allocated to the elderly is being stolen.

The team was told that members of committees tasked with the verification of needy cases are the ones taking part in the theft

According to 67-year-old Samuel Chege from Nakuru County, once they are paid, one has to give a handout of Sh1,000 to the committee.

This comes as a surprise since the Government is said to allocate 7.4 billion to orphans and vulnerable children, 5.9 billion to the elderly and 770 million to people with severe abilities.

The Ministry of Labour Assistant Director In-charge of Social Development Nicholas Mac'Botongore said that they were still relying on figures from the 2009 census and Kenya Intergrated Household Budget Survey 2005 which may explain the frequent complaints.

He also blames the disconnect in the working relationship between the County government and the National government for the challenges facing the programme.

Acting Labour Cabinet Secretary Ambassador Raychelle Omamo, in July this year announced that the government was reforming its Social Protection and Social Security to cover the employed and unemployed.

Kenya still has a high number of elderly persons either abandoned or living in extreme poverty who are supposed to benefit from the government funds.
