Over 200 People Eat Poisonous Meat

More than 200 people in Imenti-South, Meru County, have been rushed to hospital after they consumed meat from an infected cow.

The affected persons from Karandine Village are said to have fed on meat suspected to be from a cow suffering from anthrax.

40 of the victims were hospitalized as more locals who could be infected were being brought in for medical attention at the Kanyakine Level Four Hospital, Citizen Digital reports.

Residents who spoke to The Nation stated that they experienced symptoms of vomiting, joint pains and stomach upsets.

"We don't know whether the cow was slaughtered or it died but we immediately started vomiting and feelings joint pains after eating it," said one of the victims.

As at 3pm on Sunday, ten of those who were being treated at the hospital were children below the age of five years while 33 were male and 50 female.

The area Member of County Assembly (MCA) Kaumbuthu Chabari has cautioned residents against buying meat from unregistered butcheries following the incident.

Anthrax is a severe illness that is spread mostly from animals through the consumption or contact with infected meat.

It is caused by a bacteria known as Bacillus Anthracis.
