Panic as Strange Disease Hits County

Residents of Tharaka-Nithi County are a worried lot after a strange disease claimed two lives, leaving hundreds hospitalised.

The two are said to have died from severe diarrhoea while being taken to the hospital as other patients exhibited symptoms synonymous with cholera.

The outbreak has since forced the County Government to close hotels and all other food joints in a bid to curb the disease from spreading.

According to Health official Njagi Murat in Tharaka North, where the outbreak has hit most, they obtained samples and conducted tests fearing it could be cholera but the results were negative.

"We cannot say it's cholera because after testing the patients, the tests do not indicate cholera, but I urge residents who might have similar symptoms to immediately seek medication because we do not want to lose more lives," the medic was quoted by the Standard.

The country is currently on high alert following cases of cholera reported in some counties including Migori, Kisumu and Nakuru among others.
