PHOTOS: Mutunga Interrupts Court to Wake Up Sleeping Participant

Chief Justice Willy Mutunga on Tuesday send a packed Supreme Court sitting into laughter when he interrupted a fellow judge to wake up a participant who was sleeping.

The CJ briefly stopped Justice Jackton Ojwang who was delivering his ruling when he noticed that the applicant, human rights activist Okiya Omutata was in slumberland.

Mutunga immediately took the microphone without asking for permission and ordered the activist to wake up.

“Omutata wake up!” Order Mutunga amid explosive laughter in the courtroom.

The comic relief broke boredom occasioned by judges' long speeches in the determination of a case in which Deputy Chief Justice Kalpana Rawal and suspended Supreme court judge Philip Tunoi were challenging their retirement ages.

In his application, Omutata had asked the supreme court judges to excuse themselves from the case due to conflict of intrest.
