PHOTOS: Violence in Kariobangi over Voter Registration

Violence erupted on Monday in Kariobangi, Nairobi, after two rival groups clashed over alleged ferrying of voters, in the ongoing Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) mass voter registration.

It is reported that the morning skirmishes, which left several injured, brought the voter registration to a halt with the rival factions seeking separate registration centres.

Starehe OCPD Alice Kimeli accompanied by a team of police officers moved to the area to calm the situation.

The Kenya Red Cross Society stated that the fight was elicited by "importation and zoning" in the voter registration exercise.

Political leaders in the area have pointed out that voters were being transported from unknown sources using matatus to come and register in the region.

The tension comes a few days after Nominated Senator Elizabeth Ongoro and Embakasi South Member of Parliament Mohamed Sumra, confronted Embakasi North MP James Gakuya at Kariobangi police station, claiming that there was mass transfer of voters from unknown places to register in the area.
