A police officer admitted to being in contact with one of the alleged terrorists who brutally murdered 12 residents of Hindi village in Lamu County on July 5, 2014.
Speaking in court before Justice Martin Muya, Constable Samuel Akachi said the suspected murderer, Swaleh Shebe Auni, called him on the night of the incident to ask whether the OCPD would assist him with a lorry, to help him pull out his vehicle which had stuck in the mud.
“I received a phone call from Swaleh, I knew him before, he said he wanted help from the OCPD because his car was stuck,” said Mr Akachi.
Mr Akachi said he informed the accused that it was too late in the night therefore could not assist him.
The witness testified that it was during his phone conversation that he heard gun shots from the nearby Administration Police Camp.
The officer, attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations in Lamu East, said that he even informed the suspected killer not to commute to Hindi as it was not safe.
Mr Auni who was also a fuel supplier to the police, was charged with 12 counts of murder alongside his accomplice Joseph Chege, for allegedly slaughtering and burning residents in Hindi.
The police confirmed that the attacks targeted christians after a blackboard was recovered with messages inciting muslims against christians.
The hearing of the case is still on.
