President Uhuru Kenyatta Meets Central Kenya Leaders Who Lost in Jubilee Party Nominations

President Uhuru Kenyatta is believed to have privately met leaders from Central Kenya who lost in the just concluded Jubilee Party primaries and requested them to accept defeat and move on.

During the said meeting, President Kenyatta reportedly urged the group to support nomination winners and warned them not to go against the will of the people in the party strongholds.

“He asked us not to destabilize the party or fight Jubilee candidates on the ground because that could affect voter turnout,” a source privy to the meeting told The Star.

Kenyatta, who is also the Jubilee Party leader, is reported to have warned leaders who had chosen to run as independent candidates that they would be treated like the Opposition should they attempt to battle the ruling party.

He also criticised Nyeri Town MP Esther Murugi for the comments she made indicating that the region’s leaders had been thrown out and that the party leadership was favouring some aspirants.

“Don’t come here to tell me Central has no leaders. That is not true. The region has new leaders who are replacing the old ones. I will work with the new crop of leaders,” Uhuru is reported to have said.

The outcome of the Jubilee Party nominations has presented a new headache for the Head of State after key members of his reelection team were trounced in the hotly-contested party primaries.
