Revelations Indicate 75,000 HIV Positive School Children Are Not on ARVs

At least 75,000 pupils who are infected with HIV and AIDS do not have access to Anti-Retroviral (ARV) drugs.

Head teachers from different schools in the country, currently in Mombasa for a forum, were told of the dire situation that most of their students find themselves in.

Margaret Mwirigi, senior assistant director of education told the teachers that most of the infected students also experience stigma.

Those with access to the medicine shy from taking them in public for fear of being isolated by their friends and fellow students.

According to The Standard teachers heard that some of them opt to sneak out of school to go take the medicine.

Some have reportedly missed their doses while trying not to take the medicine in front of their classmates.

During the forum, headteachers gave testimonials of how some students were caught sneaking into school after they went out of school to take the medicine.

A report by Health Cabinet Secretary James Macharia shows that 260,000 adolescents in the country are living with HIV, against an estimated total population of 1.6 million people living with the condition.

Out of all of them, only half the number is on ARVs.

The teachers were encouraged to join the Government's efforts in reducing the number of children not accessing ARVs.
