Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko on Tuesday condemned the recent action by police to withdraw Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho's bodyguards.
Sonko stated that it was out of order for any Governor to have his security detail taken away.
“In my own opinion, it is wrong to withdraw bodyguards of any Governor,” Sonko stated on his facebook page.
The Nairobi Senator requested Interior and Coordination Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery and Inspector General Joseph Boinnet to allow Joho and Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi to pick their security detail.
“Kindly and humbly I appeal to the CS Interior Hon. Naissery and our good IG MR. BOINNET to allow the Mombasa Governor and his Kilifi counterpart to have bodyguards of their choice as they await the fate of the withdrawn bodyguards over claims of assault in Malindi during the by-election,” Sonko asserted.
He noted that as a member of the Jubilee coalition, he would not want the party to be blamed if anything was to happen to the two Coast leaders.
Sonko's sentiments come as a surprise, as his relationship with Governor Joho in recent past has been sour. The two almost got physical during President Uhuru Kenyatta's tour of the Coast region in January, trading accusations in the presence of the Head of State.
Last week, Joho told residents of Mombasa that Coast Regional Coordinator Nelson Marwa, working under the orders of his bosses, was out to get him. He stated publicly that if anything was to happen to him it was open who was to be held culpable.

Chief Licencing Officer Samuel Kimaru directed the Mombasa leader to surrender his three guns after his bodyguards were withdrawn, claiming that the government was reducing the number of security persons assigned to governors.
Joho has since criticised the move by the government stating that it was a political fight after ODM's victory in the Malindi by-election.
He challenged the directive to withdraw his guns and on Monday wrote to Nkaissery and Boinnet seeking for a fair hearing,
