Speaker Jumps Over Wall, Escapes Attack by Creditors

Embu County Assembly Speaker escaped narrowly after residents, suppliers and contractors stormed into the assembly with crude weapons demanding their arrears.

The demonstrators, who were supported by some Members of County Assembly (MCAs), claimed that Speaker Justus Mate had blocked the county's Sh800 Million supplementary budget that was meant to pay creditors.

With placards written 'Mate Must Go', the demonstrators headed to his office wading through armed police officers.

Mr Mate is said to have panicked and jumped over a perimeter wall near the assembly but the angry crowd did not back down.

They began breaking his burglar-proof office door but on failing, they sought to block it completely by nailing timber bars on it.

They further expressed their frustrations by breaking the office window and throwing underwears and placards inside.

Mr Mate blamed Governor Martin Wambora for the attack claiming that he had earlier warned him of “dire consequences” if the supplementary budget was not forwaded for debate in the county assembly by the end of the month.

The MCAs sided with and praised the demonstrators affirming that it was their right to do so.

“Mr Mate should forward the budget for debate and passage within 48 hours or MCAs will fire him,”said deputy Speaker Ibrahim Swaleh.
