Sportpesa Suspends Gor Mahia, AFC Sponsorship

Sports betting company Sportpesa has suspended a multi-million sponsorship deal with football giants Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards with immediate effect.

The firm announced the decision after the two clubs were charged for violent conduct of their supporters during matches played in the ongoing Sportpesa Premier League.

Sportpesa CEO Ronald Karauri announced the decision after the two clubs were summoned to appear before the Kenyan Premier League's Disciplinary and Complaints Committee.

Gor Mahia is now set to lose close to Sh65 Million which had been pumped into the club by Sportpesa, with their counterparts suffering a loss of more than Sh35 Million.

AFC Leopards got into trouble after a section of its fans and stewards stormed the pitch and roughed up match officials, leading to cancellation of a match against Ulinzi Stars last Saturday.

On the other hand, Gor mahia was charged after some of its supporters hurled bottles and stones to an assistant referee during a match which they lost to Tusker on April 16.

During the incident, the defending champions' goalkeeper Boniface Oluoch was also blamed for shoving the referee, which was condemned by football analysts.
