Staff Take University to Court Over Suspension

Nine senior officials at the University of Eldoret have taken the school to court, to challenge their suspension, following allegations that they had a hand in instigating the recent wave of student strikes.

According to The Standard, the nine filed a joint suit at the Nakuru Industrial Court yesterday seeking their reinstatement.

The staff claim that the university did not follow the required procedures in suspending them.

Following several strikes by students in the school, the university suspended the nine on Friday as investigations into their involvement continue.

The Nation reports that the staff were accused of colluding with local politicians to cause unrest in the school.

According to Classic 105,while filing the suit, the staff said they should have been given a verbal warning first, given letters to show cause and summoned to appear before the administration but instead, they were suspended through a memo.

The school which is located near Eldoret town in Uasin Gishu County has witnessed more than two strikes by students in the past year.

The latest strike saw students protest over alleged increase in school fees.

They were all sent home two weeks ago after the protests led to destruction of school property.
