Teachers Ordered to Declare Wealth

Teachers have up to December 31st to make their wealth declaration, failure to which the Teachers Service Commission will declare them non-compliant.

According to a statement by TSC CEO Nancy Macharia, all teachers including new employees should fill in the wealth declaration forms and submit the sealed envelops to TSC headquarters before the end of the year.

TSC further told school heads that they must indicate all teachers who failed to comply, and also those who were on leave - special leave, maternity leave, sick leave, discipline cases or interdiction, and those who have died in the course of the declaration period.

Ms Macharia noted that, Section 26 of the Public Officer Ethics Act 2003, revised 2009, required all tutors to make their declaration biannually.

"Every public officer shall, once every two years submit to the responsible commission a declaration of the income, assets and liabilities of himself, his spouse or spouses and his dependent children under the age of 18 years."

"It is for this reason that the commission is instructing its employees to strictly adhere to the provisions on declaration of income, assets and liabilities," Macharia was quoted by the Standard.

Teachers have been in an unending wrangle with TSC over their unpaid September salaries, even after intervention by President Uhuru Kenyatta and newly appointed Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi.
