TSC Demotes 2 School Principals After Hiking School Fees

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) on Wednesday demoted two school principals from Homa Bay County for inflating school fees.

The principals from Kamolo and Kodhoch Secondary schools are said to have demanded more money from parents than the standard package set by the government while students were reporting back to school on Wednesday.

In March 2015, the government gazetted regulations setting the boarding school fees at Sh53,554 per year, day schools at Sh9,374 per year and Sh37,210 annually for special schools.

Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i warned that any school principal who demanded more money than the set package would face dire consequences.

“Action will be taken against any principal found charging extra fees. These rules must be implemented without exception and I will have regional coordinators and county directors monitoring them,” Matiangi stated.

The Ministry of Education also gave a toll-free number for parents to call in case they are charged more money that the stipulated amount.

“Please call Matiangi’s office on the toll-free number 0800720940. The information you give will be followed up and your number will NOT be displayed on the receiver,” an alert by the ministry read.

Meanwhile, as students reported back to school, parents complained that the cost of uniform and text books was so expensive.
