Uhuru and Raila Finally Agree on Something

After clashing over ICC cases and the disbandment of IEBC, President Uhuru Kenyatta and Opposition leader Raila Odinga have finally spoken in unison on a Bill debated in parliament on Wednesday.

The two leaders called upon Parliament to pass the Two Third Gender Laws (Amendment Bill) 2015 that seeks to increase the number of women in parliament to meet the two thirds majority threshold.

On Wednesday, Odinga and Kenyatta urged Members of Parliament to pass the bill which would go a long way in ensuring gender equity in public offices.

The President expressed that the Bill would also empower the government to take legislative measures to realise the two-thirds principle and also secure gender equity in government.

"I urge all MPs from every party to turn up in Parliament and vote for the two-thirds Gender Rule Bill," President Kenyatta asserted.

On the other hand his Opposition counterpart cautioned that history would judge Kenya harshly if the MPs failed to pass the Bill.

“These are one of those moments when bipartisanship must prevail for national good. There must be no Jubilee or CORD in this matter,” Odinga said in a statement to newsrooms.

The Bill, sponsored by National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale, seeks to amend the constitution to allow political parties to nominate more women into parliament should the elected ones not make up the required majority.

The constitution states that no single gender should make up more than two thirds majority in a public office.
