Uhuru Most Popular in Poll Sponsored by Atwoli

An opinion poll conducted by two University of Nairobi lecturers shows President Uhuru Kenyatta would get a landslide win if elections were held today.

The poll, conducted under the sponsorship of COTU Secretary-General Francis Atwoli, reported that 55.1 percent of voters would vote for Kenyatta while ODM presidential candidate Raila Odinga would come a distant second with 35.1 percent of the vote.

Atwoli had set out to establish and analyse the current political leadership status focusing on popularity in Kenya as a whole and the Western region in particular.

The poll also reported that Deputy President William Ruto and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka would tie at number three with each scoring 2.3 percent.

Ruto has already declared that he will not be contesting in 2017 but would instead support Kenyatta’s re-election.

The primary objective was the poll was to measure the leading political figure in Western Kenya.

It reported that Amani National Congress (ANC) leader Musalia Mudavadi was the most popular politician in Western Kenya with a score of 39 percent.

Interestingly, Mudavadi did not make a showing in the national popularity polling.

Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya and Bungoma Senator Moses Wetang’ula tied at 30 percent.

Budalang’i MP Ababu Namwamba was also mentioned in the poll and was reported to have a popularity score of 0.4 percent.

Following the results of the poll, Atwoli led Luhya elders in crowning Mudavadi as the community spokesman on political issues.

The announcement dubbed Mulembe Declaration, was made on Saturday at the historic Bukhungu stadium in Kakamega.

The study was supervised by Prof George Owidhi from the School of Economics and Dr Fred Jonyo from the Department of Political Science and Public Administration.
