The government has issued strict warnings after a building collapsed in Nairobi's Huruma estate leaving more than 10 people dead and scores injured.
During a visit to the area, President Uhuru Kenyatta ordered the Ministry of Interior and the County government to undertake an immediate survey of all the houses which are at risk of collapsing and carry out immediate evacuation.
President Kenyatta who braced harsh weather to visit the estate was appalled by the condition of rental houses that had been constructed in the area.
“I have instructed officials of the interior ministry to immediately move people from houses at a risk of collapsing,” he announced.
The Head of State further instructed that the owner of the building be hunted down and arrested in order to take responsibility for crumbling of the house.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery who also called on residents of Huruma further directed that the architect and engineer involved in construction of the ill-fated house be apprehended after it emerged that the National Construction Authority had condemned the structure, but the directive was ignored.
“The owner of the building, the architect and the engineers who were involved in the construction will have to be arrested and charged. They must be brought to book,” he declared.
The building building caved in on Friday night due to heavy rains pounding the City, killing 10 occupants with the death toll expected to rise as rescue mission continues.
