VIDEO: Uhuru Makes Major Changes in Police Leadership

President Uhuru Kenyatta on Tuesday replaced Grace Kaindi as the Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) in a major reshuffle of the Police Force.

Joel Mboya Kitili, who had been the Commandant of the General Service Unit took over from Kaindi in an acting capacity.

Kaindi had served in various ranks since joining the Kenya Police Force in 1975 .

She was on Tuesday appointed as an ambassador to an unspecified position, awaiting vetting and approval by parliament.

It is unclear why the president made the changes, but in a statement by the Statehouse Spokesman Manoah Esipisu, the nomination of Kitili is meant to ensure a smooth transition with regards to the ongoing reforms in the National Police Service.

The reforms are meant to bring together the Administration Police Service, the Kenya Police and Directorate of Criminal Investigations.

Kaindi has in the past fallen out with top officials and according to The Nation, it could be one of the reasons she was replaced.

She came under sharp criticism over how she handled the Garissa University terror attack that claimed the lives of 148 people.

She has also in the past been accused of unfair promotions of some police officers.

Other appointments include Martin Kimani to the position of Director of Counter Terrorism Centre, who replaced Isaac Ochieng.Ochieng was also made an envoy by the President.

Here's a report on the changes by K24.
