Villagers Brave Shooting, Attack Armed Robbers

Residents of Gikongo Village in Tharaka-Nithi County on Tuesday courageously took on armed robbers stoning two of them to death.

It is reported that the locals, who were not terrified by shots fired at them by the thugs, quickly descended on the robbers as soon as they ran out of bullets.

The villagers responded to screams by Ms Virginia Mumbi, who had been robbed of unknown valuables while she rode on a bodaboda heading to Kathangacinoi market.

The gang had ordered Ms Mumbi and the motorbike operator to lie down but the two failed to comply, hence were slashed with a panga prompting them to raise alarm.

Residents are reported to have covered three kilometers chasing the gang, overpowering two while one of them escaped.

In the hot pursuit, a three-year-old child suffered a gun shot with the police recovering Sh 600,000, a gun and a machete from the suspects.

Confirming the incident, Tharaka-Nithi County Police Commander Johnstone Ipara, said that members of the gang had become a problem to the people of Gikongo Village.
