What the Pope's Flag Means

During Pope Francis' visit in Kenya, the Vatican's flag could be seen conspicuously flying at different points within the City of Nairobi. The flags hoisted along major highways where the Pope's motorcade passed, have symbolic meanings drawn from the Gospel, represented by the keys given to Apostle Peter by Christ.

The flag is divided into two parts with one side bearing colour gold and the other white which contains the emblem.

The emblem consists of crossed keys, one of gold and the other one of silver, mounting the Papal's tiara which has three layers. The keys represent the key to heaven.

The gold key, leaning to the right, alludes to the power in the kingdom of the heavens while the silver one, indicates the spiritual authority of the papacy on earth. This was derived from Matthew 16:19, where Jesus bestowed authority on St. Peter.
