Why Kenyan Workers Will Not Celebrate Labour Day

The Trade Unions Congress of Kenya (TUC-Ke) has instructed all civil servants in the country to boycott this years Labour Day Celebrations.

In a press release, the umbrella union advised its members to refrain from attending the upcoming celebrations to protest what they termed as the government's failure to address their recurring predicaments.

“We in the Trade Unions Congress of Kenya have not seen anything to celebrate. We have chosen and advising our members to celebrate in silence,” the statement read in part.

The Union's Secretary General Wilson Sossion further indicated that: "In the last four years, Kenyan workers, especially those in the public sector, have witnessed loss of earnings. These include mismanagement of public resources, corruption, depreciation of the shilling, unpredictable economic growth, leading to increases in consumer prices and a ballooning wage bill".

Mr Sossion noted that the Government workers including teachers and health workers were demotivated as their issues remained neglected.

In the statement, the union demanded the Government to address salary isuues of teachers, lectures and other workers failure to which they would withdraw labour from all sector and go on an indusrial action come July 1, 2016.

TUC-Ke further called for the Government to address recent 'injustices' on civil workers including chiefs and their assistants who were dismissed from work by Interior and Coordination PS Karanja Kibicho without following the laid down procedures in the Employment Act.
