Why Local Herdsmen Now Face Murder Charges

Four herdsmen from Tana River County are set to face murder charges.

The four suspects are believed to be behind the latest wave of tribal clashes in the region, which saw six people die, a week ago.

The four, who sustained injuries in the Sunday clashes were arrested August 8 after investigations led the police to Hola District Hospital, where the four had been admitted.

The suspects- Mohamed Kanchora, Saladh Guyo, Haji Mohamed and Omar Salad Guyo were arraigned before Tana River Senior Magistrate Kiprono Matutu on the said charges.

They, however, did not take pleas to the charges, following the prosecution’s application for more time for police investigation.

The prosecution cited completing investigation within 24 hours as required had proved impossible for the police due to danger posed to potential witnesses as they were being traced.

The Senior Magistrate ordered that the suspects be detained at Hola Police Station,.

They will be presented to the High Court in Malindi on August 24.

Clashes between Somali and Orma pastoralists in the area, have been rife, at times escalating to death.

The cause of the fights has mostly been blamed on ownership of pastures.
