Why Mwai Kibaki's Water Supply Might Be Disconnected

Water supply to Former President Mwai Kibaki's home in Othaya might be disconnected, Nyeri MCAs were informed.

According to a debtor list by Othaya Mukurweini Water Services Company (OMWASCO) Kibaki had a water debt of over Sh500,000 as of June 30, 2013.

The company's internal audit revealed that the water bill had accumulated since 2013, placing the former President as the highest individual debtor followed closely by Chinga Girls High School.

“We approached Kibaki a few years ago before he left office and he ordered State House to settle the amount. They paid Sh200,000 then,” company internal auditor Peter Ndirangu stated.

The management of the water company was on Thursday questioned by Nyeri Public Investments Committee (PIC) on audit queries raised over Sh108,814,615 amassed debts in the 2013-14 financial year.

The Committee's  Chairperson Stephen Mwaniki wanted the company to explain why they had not followed up on the accrued bills.

OMWASCO Internal Auditor justified that there had been constant changes in the management, which made it difficult to follow up on the debts accumulated over the years.

Due to the inconsistencies, the water company which did not have an updated list of debtors was asked to consolidate its reports and account for the losses made by the company.

Other debtors include; Chinga Boys High School, Kiaguthu coffee factory, and Othaya General Service Unit camp.

According to the Nation, Mr Kibaki’s spokesman, Gituku Ngari refused to comment saying such matters are handled by the government with regards to the law on the ex-President’s perks.
