Why Striking Teachers Could be Sacked this Month

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has issued a warning requiring teachers to resume work by September 18 or be ejected from the payroll.

TSC Chairperson Lydia Nzomo on Monday confirmed that they had received details of teachers who had been working since the 22nd of August.

"Teachers who will not have heeded the call will be removed from the payroll. Consequently, their salaries will be stopped and their names struck out of the TSC payroll," stated Nzomo.

Nzomo also confirmed that TSC County Directors had informed the commission that at least 22 percent of primary schools and 54 percent of secondary schools by Monday were fully operational.

According to The Standard, the teachers' employer was only allocated 174 million for the year 2015-2016 which put the TSC at a difficult position hence failing to honour the ruling by the Supreme Court that upheld a previous decision by the labour court which awarded teachers a 50-60 per cent pay hike.

On Monday the industrial strike by teachers entered its third week as their unions stood their ground saying they would only resume duty if the government implements their pay increment.

Last week President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto advised teachers to quit the strike arguing that government could not afford to pay their new salaries which now runs into Billions.
