University of Nairobi Students to Protest on Monday Over Union Elections

University of Nairobi (UoN) students have announced that they will begin massive protests on Monday over delayed elections of the Students Organisation of Nairobi University (SONU) officials.

Speaking to the press on Friday, SONU chairperson aspirants Ronnie Mamba and Mike Jacobs divulged that they will make good their threats and paralyse all business in the Central Business District until they are heard.

Mamba stated that come Monday, UoN students will exercise their right to picket and demonstrate day and night until they ensure their demands are met.

He accused the University of conspiring with the current Union chair Babu Owino, to amend the SONU constitution and delay the polls until after August 8.

Mamba claimed that a majority of the amendments that had been put forward were targeting Article 18 of the Constitution which mainly focused on the elections of SONU officials.

The students declared that they will occupy Univesity Way, State House Road and all adjacent roads during the demonstrations.

A few weeks ago, the group had sent a notice to the police expressing intent to hold massive demonstrations in Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu

They had vowed that during the protests, they would present a petition to UON's Vice-Chancellor, the Ethics Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero and the Education and Interior Cabinet Secretaries to express their displeasure.

Babu Owino has been SONU's Chairman for the last five years and has expressed interest in vying for the Embakasi East parliamentary seat in the August 8 Election.
