Court Drops Charges Against Laikipia MP Matthew Lempurkel

The court has dropped charges against Laikipia North Member of Parliament (MP) Matthew Lempurkel who was arrested over the murder of British ex-soldier Tristan Voorspuy.

This was after the prosecution told the court it had failed to gather more evidence to sustain a murder charge against the MP.

“As prosecution, we do not have enough evidence against the accused. We are applying that this case be closed,” Caroline Muriu told resident Magistrate Evans Ngige.

Mr Voorspuy, a UK Billionaire, was shot dead by invaders at his Sosian Ranch in Laikipia County where he had gone to assess a damage caused in a previous invasion.

He rode there on horseback in the morning but staffers at the farm lost contact with him at noon.

A helicopter flying overhead saw a horse that had been shot dead at 2pm. Later, a tracker from the conservancy found his body nearby.

Mr Lempurkel was arrested on allegations of having links to the recent invasions of private property in the County leading to violent attacks in the area including Voorspuy's death.

He was released on a Sh200,000 bond and required to report to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations three times a week.

After Mr Voorspuy's murder, British High Commissioner to Kenya Nic Hailey urged the Kenyan Government to beef up security in the volatile area.
