The Amani National Congress (ANC) nominee for the Matuga Parliamentary seat, Mr Kassim Sawa, on Wednesday accidentally shot himself in the lower abdomen.
Mr Sawa accidentally shot himself while at the Moi International Airport.
Moi International Airport deputy OCPD Beatrice Kigalu confirmed the incident stating that the politician shot himself while handing over the firearm for safekeeping at the airport.
"He is a licenced firearm holder. It happened when he was giving out the firearm as required in the security procedures at the facility," she stated.
The deputy OCPD mentioned that Mr Sawa was rushed to Bomu Hospital where he is currently receiving treatment.
Ms Kigalu further noted that police had opened investigations to determine what exactly transpired.
"We have also launched our investigations on the same so that we get more details about the incident," she noted.
Mr Sawa is seeking to be the next Matuga Member of Parliament and will face off with incumbent Hassan Mwanyoha (ODM), Hassan Mwarora (Wiper) and Mwalimu Degore (Jubilee).
