Nairobi Governor-elect Mike Sonko Exposes Cartel at City Hall Asking for Bribes

Nairobi Governor-elect Mike Sonko has cautioned Nairobi residents against a group of people at City Hall soliciting for bribes and claiming to be his staff.

In a statement to the press, Sonko noted that the cartels are now claiming they can speed up pending contract payments and influence the award of fresh tenders.

"It has come to my attention that some individuals purporting to be my staff are soliciting bribes from contractors and suppliers to influence speedy processing of their pending payments.

"I wish to categorically state here that I have not mandated anyone whatsoever to either solicit or follow up on any pending payments at City Hall," the newly elected Governor stressed on Monday.

Meanwhile, Sonko yesterday surprised many after he rejected a Sh25 Million fund set aside for his swearing in ceremony.

The incoming Governor ordered county Chief Finance Officer Luke Gatimu to use the money to offset the one-month arrears owed to workers within 48 hours.

Sonko clarified that the payments would be made after his team has assessed the debts owed by the Nairobi Government.

"All pending payments will be scrutinised by a competent team and payments made including staff salaries which are already being processed and I have already authorized for disbursement of staff salaries within the next 48 hours," he declared.

He warned the cartels, insisting that his administration would follow the rules and guidelines set concerning the tendering process.

"To those with fake claims and the cartels, please keep off before the long arm of the government gets hold of you. Under my administration, tenders will be awarded transparently and according to the procurement laws," he asserted.

The immediate former Nairobi Senator beat incumbent Evans Kidero after securing 849,082 votes against Kidero's 677,218.
