Former Chief Justice Willy Mutunga Reveals How Nairobi Water Company Cartels Conned Him

Former Chief Justice Willy Mutunga has made new revelations on how Nairobi County Water cartels conned him while he was at the Supreme Court.

He made this announcement after the Nairobi Water Company yesterday disconnected water supply from a borehole he had been using since 2016 while he was the Chief Justice.

In a series of tweets, Dr Mutunga disclosed that in 2016, cartels forced him to pay Sh20,000 in arrears accrued by the former owner of his flat. He made the payment with the hope that the water system would be re-connected.

The Former CJ, however, stated that despite paying the money, he never got a drop of water from Nairobi water, but the company continued to bill him for a minimum charge.

"When I realized I was being cheated I requested disconnection. I had to pay 15.5 K for the minimum charges! I lost 35+K (over Sh35,000).

"Luckily for me, the apartments have a borehole. So I thought I was rid of Nairobi Water. I was wrong!" he stated.

The former CJ disclosed that the Nairobi water company disconnected the borehole water yesterday simply because seven out of 24 owners in the apartment had not paid the minimum charges that had initially cost him Sh35,000.

He illustrates how he went ahead to contact a woman at the company who promised to follow up but no solution came up.

"I talked to two supervisors from Nairobi Water about this. They asked me to call their supervisor, Nancy.

"Nancy said she would seek the advice of her supervisor and let our caretaker know. She didn't," he noted.

The Former Chief Justice has now asked newly-elected Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko to reign in the cartels, adding that he (Mutunga) will be part of a movement that fights for "clean and safe water in adequate quantities" for Nairobi residents.
