EACC Arrests Senior Kitui County Official

Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) officers on Tuesday arrested a senior County officer in Kitui barely a month after Governor Charity Ngilu took office.

Dr Naomi Mawia Mang'atu, a member of the County Public Service Board, was arrested and taken to court before Kitui Principal Magistrate Johnson Munguti.

The senior county officer was charged with doing business with the County Government where she undertook a Sh2 Million contract for the supply of fuel and lubricants.

According to the charge sheet, from July 18 to November 6, 2014, Dr Mang’atu made the supplies through tender number CGOK-Kitui/T/03/2014-2015 awarded to Mapana Enterprises Limited, a company believed to be hers.

The prosecution amounted the charges to abuse of office, graft and conflict of interest which is contrary to Section 42 Sub-section 3 as read with section 48 of the Ethics and Economic Crimes Act.

The accused, however, denied the charges and was released on a bond of Sh500,000 plus a surety of similar amount.

The case will be mentioned on September 26 while the hearing is set for January 15, 2018.

On Monday, two government officials were also arrested in Nairobi County after they were accused of being part of a land grabbing syndicate in Nairobi's Parklands.

Nairobi County Governor Mike Sonko noted that he planned the arrest with the anti-corruption officers after the rightful owners of the property complained to him about the land feud.
