Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria and ODM Woman Representative Gladys Wanga Facing Imprisonment

The CEO of the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) Hassan Sheikh Mohammed has warned Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria and Homa Bay Woman Representative Gladys Wanga that they both risk 6 months in jail if they are found guilty of hate speech.

Speaking on Tuesday morning at the NCIC offices, Mohammed added that the Commission would forward the files of legislators to the Director of Public Prosecutions if it finds 'substance' in the issues being investigated.

The two legislators had been summoned to appear before the Cohesion Commission on Tuesday but only Kuria showed up.

Ms Wanga’s utterances, that some people termed derogatory, were allegedly made in one of the Opposition’s political campaigns ahead of the October 26 repeat presidential election.

The Woman Rep is alleged to have made utterances linking President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto to the spread of cholera while making a speech on September 25.

Kuria, on the other hand, is expected at the Commission to answer to a similar case.

He was summoned over utterances he made in late September against NASA principal Raila Odinga.

On Friday October 6, the controversial legislator was directed to appear before the NCIC to clarify a statement he made asking the Inspector General of Police to kill Odinga and his supporters during the planned anti-IEBC demos.

Kuria is not new to controversy as he has severally found himself on the wrong side of the law charged with a similar offence.

Recently, he also sparked controversy when he stated that he would be coordinating meetings of the 'Nairobi Business Community' on a daily basis outside Anniversary Towers to protect their businesses.

The NCIC also summoned Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko over hateful remarks.
