Cyrus Jirongo Shamed At His Polling Station

United Democratic Party (UDP) Presidential Candidate Cyrus Jirongo did not receive a single vote at the Lumakanda Primary School polling station where he votes.

Following the repeat presidential election, officials at the station in Kakamega County reported that the former Lugari MP had not reported to the polling station by the time polling closed at 5 pm.

The move came as a surprise given that the candidate had appealed to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to include his name on the ballot for the October 26 election.

The candidate had been excluded from the contest after a Commercial Court declared him bankrupt. The High Court , however, temporarily suspended the bankruptcy notice allowing him to lawfully take part in the repeat poll.

Mr Jirongo garnered zero votes at the polling station as the final tally stood at 80 votes for President Uhuru Kenyatta and one vote each for ODM leader Raila Odinga and Thirdway Alliance candidate Dr Ekuru Aukot.

Jirongo's reasons for skipping the poll remain uncertain as efforts made to reach him were unsuccessful.

He will be back in court as businessman Sammy Kogo is seeking a new hearing to be granted orders to execute the bankruptcy orders in a suit where Mr Kogo is seeking to recover a debt of about Sh700 Million.

Elsewhere, Dr Aukot and independent candidate Joe Nyaga cast their ballots and addressed the press soon after, calling for peace as Kenyans await the results to be declared.

The IEBC cancelled plans to conduct the repeat poll in areas where the election failed to kick off as scheduled on October 26.

A proposed date of October 28 was also rejected by NASA leaders and their supporters as some declared they were observing the Sabbath, therefore, they could not vote.
