Fred Matiang'i Sets End Date for 8-4-4 System

Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i  on Wednesday announced that the 8-4-4 education system would be completely phased out in 2027.

Addressing the media at Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD), CS Matiang'i explained that the government would enforce the new education system using a gradual phased-in approach.

"It will take us until 2027 to actually phase out the 8-4-4 system because we have adopted the gradual system of implementation which takes time and we don't want to rush it," he elucidated.

He added that the programme for the rollout of new school curriculum was on course with designs already sent out to schools in the pilot programme.

"We began the roll-out using a national pilot programme. We trained 170,000 teachers to ensure the program is successfully implemented," he stated.

The CS stated that implementation of the 2-6-3-3 curriculum in 2018 would include having the system anchored in law.

"As we roll out the new curriculum we have included the activities of finalizing the sessional paper so that the process is anchored in law and approved by Parliament," he conveyed.

Earlier in September, a Mombasa resident has sued the Ministry of Education and KICD over the implementation of the new curriculum that was introduced in 470 selected schools across the country in June 2017.

After the system was introduced, KICD Director Julius Jwan stated learners from Pre-unit to Standard Three would be involved in the piloting of the curriculum.
