High Court Temporarily Suspends Criminal Charges Against Jimi Wanjigi

Businessman Jimi Wanjigi is having the last laugh after the High Court temporarily suspended criminal proceedings against him.

On Thursday, Judge George Odunga ruled that the criminal charges against Wanjigi currently before a Nyeri court should be halted.

Justice Odunga, however, declined to issue orders barring police from charging the businessman in any other court in the country.

A Nyeri Magistrate had ordered the businessman affiliated to NASA to appear the court on March 5 to take a plea.

The matter was already before High Court Judge Justice Chacha Mwita but the police served Wanjigi on Wednesday with orders to appear before a Nyeri court.

Wanjigi had been charged with being in possession of illegal firearms which had been confiscated from his home in 2017.

Police, led by OCPD Matawa Muchangi, raided a house in Malindi allegedly owned by the businessman where they recovered five AK 47 rifles and 93 rounds of ammunition.

He was also charged with being in possession of illegal firearms; a Ceska pistol, a Glock 19, a shotgun and a semi-automatic self-loading military assault rifle calibre.

For the Ceska and Glock pistols, wanjigi was charged with owning them without a firearm certificate while for the assault rifle, he was accused of being in possession of a prohibited firearm.

The businessman snubbed the court summons on Friday claiming he was not aware of the charges that had been levelled against him.
