Immigration Department Now Involved in Alfred Keter's Case

Magistrate Francis Andayi has ordered the Department of Immigration to investigate one of the co-accused in a Sh634 Million fraud suit against Alfred Keter, Nandi Hills lawmaker whose election was nullified.

The Magistrate gave the order following an application by the prosecution seeking to move Mr Madat Chatur from the Industrial Area Prison to the Immigration Department at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

A sworn affidavit signed by Chief Inspector Geoffery Kinyua expressed suspicions that Mr Chatur may be a foreigner.

State Counsel Daniel Karuri added that the accused presented an identification card belonging to another person, further raising suspicions.

"Madat Saburali Chatur is a flight risk given we have not established his real identity since he presented an ID card of another person bearing the same name and number when he arrested at the Central Bank of Kenya," Karuri stated.

Magistrate Andayi responded: "I am satisfied with the reasons given by the prosecution and the first accused will be escorted to Immigration Department at JKIA within seven days."

When the three were arraigned in court, Mr Karuri unsuccessfully pleaded to have Chatur denied bail arguing that the accused could easily flee the country to escape prosecution.

The court denied the plea and released Chatur and his co-accused, Keter and Arthur Sakwa, on a cash bail of Sh2 Million.

The three are accused of presenting forged treasury bills amounting to Sh634 Million to the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK).

Their dramatic arrest was captured on live TV where the Jubilee politician immediately denied prior knowledge that the T-bills were counterfeit.

Since the arrest, Mr Keter has suggested that his arrest and subsequent loss of his elective post amount to persecution from "people in high places".
