Thika Road Speed Limit Increased to 110kph

The government has announced new speed limits for motorists using the Thika Super Highway.

According to the Kenya National Highways Authority (KENHA), the new speed limit will be 110kph up from the initial 100kph.

This, however, does not apply to matatus and other public service vehicles as they should not exceed 80kph.

Kenyans.co.ke also learnt that the new changes only apply to motorists using the 42-kilometre stretch from Nairobi to Thika.

“The 110kph is the maximum recommended speed for the design of this road. It does not apply to all roads.

“Each road has its specific maximum design speed, taking into account factors such as the terrain the road passes through, traffic count, pedestrian traffic, other road users’ safety and the number of lanes," divulged KENHA’s corporate affairs manager Charles Njogu.

Following the introduction of an express lane for PSVs using the Thika Super Highway last week, the Ministry of Transport also revealed that similar changes will be made on five other major roads.

The roads include; Lang’ataMombasaJogooJuja, and Waiyaki Way.

According to Urban Planning Principal Secretary Charles Mwaura, the development was part of a larger project that will see some roads expanded to ensure that there are enough lanes to be shared between the PSVs and private vehicles.

“Some of them will first have to undergo some expansion as the lanes cannot be marked as they are now,” he stated earlier this month.
