How Judge George Odunga's Court Faired in Judicial Ranking

High Court Judge George Odunga is among the renowned names in the judiciary thanks to what is considered by a section of Kenyans as controversial rulings.

However, a Judiciary scorecard launched by Chief Justice David Maraga on Friday, to award the best performing Courts in the country, named Machakos High Court the best performing in the country.

Although headed by Justice Pauline Nyamweya, Justice Odunga was transferred to the court in 2018 with his tenure at the Milimani Law Courts marred with controversy.

Notable cases that he presided include the case involving the controversial arrest, detention, and deportation of Lawyer Miguna Miguna.

In the matter, he found the Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi, Inspector-General of Police Joseph Boinett and Immigration PS Gordon Kihalangwa in contempt of court and fined them Ksh 200,000 each.

In mid-2017, Justice Odunga’s division was rated the best performing High Court station in terms of service delivery.

The top rank was attained after Justice Nyamweya cleared over 500 cases during the period 2016-2017.

Coming second was Voi High Court where Justice Jacqueline Kamau cleared 331 cases followed by Kericho High Court where Justice Mumbi Ngugi cleared 222 cases.

Among the appellate Courts, Malindi Court of Appeal was rated the best performing after reducing case backlog by 62 percent.

The Malindi Court is headed by Justices Alnashir Visram, Martha Koome and Wanjiru Karanja.

The Labour Court in Nakuru presided by Justice Stephen Radido and in the Environment and Land division category, Kisii's Justice John Mutungi emerged the best having cleared 173 cases.
