Nyeri County Assembly Approves Deputy Governor Nominee Caroline Karugu

The search for a Nyeri Deputy Governor is making progress after the county assembly approved the nomination of Dr Caroline Karugu as the second in command.

The motion to have her approved was passed by a simple majority with some members strongly opposed to it.

On Wednesday morning, Majority Leader James Kanyugo who leads the Publics Appointment Committee gave notice of motion for her approval.

After the vote was conducted, Nyeri County Assembly Speaker John Kaguchia declared that the motion was a monumental moment as this was the first time the issue of filling the deputy governor's seat was being debated in a county assembly.

He added that their decision would guide other counties when in a similar position.

“This is a historic moment that will set the pace for other counties who have suffered the same fate as Nairobi,” he noted.

On his part, Kanyugo defended the nominee's record describing her a highly qualified individual while urging youth and women to support one of their own.

The motion was seconded by Aguthi Gaaki ward MCA Stanley Wakibia stated: “We are celebrating the girl child in this county and there is no other way we can do it better than giving Karugu a chance to serve the county."

In agreement was Kiganjo Mathari ward MCA Muthoni Kuruga termed Dr Karugu as a performer and would be valuable to the county due to her connection all the way to grassroots level.

On the other hand, led by Deputy Speaker Samuel Kariuki, the county legislators questioned some of the nominee's credentials.

At one point, Kirimukuyu ward MCA Muriithi Ndagita and Samuel Kariuki put forward their queries on Dr Karugu's academic qualifications stating that her name was missing from the Daystar graduation list.
