Former KTN Journalist Aaron Ochieng Remanded

Former KTN editor Aaron Ochieng' will be remanded after failing to pay a Ksh1 Million out of court settlement to Joy Doreen Biira who accused him of stealing her car.

Ochieng's Ksh300,000 bail was also forfeited and he will be locked up pending his trial.

In July last year, he formally apologised to Doreen for stealing her Ksh2.8 million Mercedes Benz but filed a statement that contradicted his initial account where he stated that he collaborated with the plaintiff.

"I wish to state to this court that I acted alone and that Ms Biira did not in any way participate in the theft of the car registration number KBY 831K, and the statement I made is completely false," said Mr Ochieng.

When Ochieng' appeared before Milimani Senior Principal Magistrate Joyce Gandani in January 2017, he denied two counts of stealing and handling stolen property.

He was, however, charged and directed to deposit cash bail of Ksh300, 000 or execute a bond of Ksh1 Million to secure his freedom.

The Mercedes-Benz was stolen from Standard Group's parking lot along Mombasa Road on December 23.

The former editor was arrested on December 30 in Kisumu and later transferred to Nairobi and detained at Industrial Area police station in connection with the theft of the workmate’s car.

The charge sheet stated that Ochieng, on December 23 at Standard Group Limited offices along Mombasa Road in Nairobi, jointly with others not before court, stole a motor vehicle KBY 831 K Mercedes Benz class E 220 worth Ksh2.8 million.

“On December 30, 2016, at Kondele Shopping Centre in Kisumu City otherwise than the course of stealing you dishonestly retained the said motor vehicle knowing or having reason to believe it to have been stolen, “ stated the second count of handling stolen property.
