Lawmakers could still be headed to Japan for a controversial trip even after Speaker Justin Muturi refused to sign off on it.
Speaking on Thursday to Nation, Webuye MP Dan Wanyama indicated that they could still travel to Japan for the 2018 FIVB Women's World Championship where Kenya's Malkia Strikers will be in action.
A former National Mens Volleyball team Captain, Wanyama stated that their presence at the tournament would boost the Kenyan players' morale.
“This is a genuine request we have made to the Speaker and Clerk of the house.
"I have played volleyball competitively and can tell you our ladies will be motivated and play better when they spot us cheering them on," he stated.
The matter comes a few months after an uproar was sparked as several lawmakers attended the FIFA World Cup in Russia with taxpayers footing the bill.
In addition, the Malkia Strikers faced serious funding challenges in the run-up to the world championships in Japan.
Unable to participate in friendlies against other national teams, coach Japheth Munala used friendlies against mens' teams to 'build up stamina and mental strength'.
Wanyama, Senators Irungu Kangata (Murang’a), Andrew Langat (Bomet), Christin Zawadi, Beatrice Kwamboka and Victor Prengei (all Nominated), as well as Bomet East MP Beatrice Kones are among the MPs interested in the trip.
The national team arrived in Hamamatsu on Thursday after losing their final build-up match 0-3(19-25,22-25,19-25) to a select Japan team in Korube City.
The team's Technical Director David Lung'aho expressed confidence that the team would manage an impressive showing at the tournament.
Kenyans will rally behind the Strikers as they take on Kazakhstan on Saturday and Serbia on Sunday.
