Mike Sonko Reveals New Situation at Pumwani Hospital After Surprise 2 AM Visit

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko on Monday morning made another impromptu visit to Pumwani Maternity Hospital at 2 AM.

During the visit, Sonko expressed his gratitude over the massive transformation since his last visit when he discovered 12 infant bodies stuffed in boxes and paper bags.

"Daktari hii ndiyo kazi. I am very happy. Sikuji hapa kufanya siasa. Tumeangalia ata mortuary, hakuna deaths (This is commendable and I am impressed. I dont come here to do politics. We have visited the morgue and there are no deaths)," the county boss stated.

Contrary to the wanting level of services offered back then, Sonko found all the medics at their workstations attending the mothers and their babies.

"We have made 77 deliveries tonight, and all of them are alive," a medic at the facility noted.

Besides, Sonko interviewed several mothers and their relatives who expressed their satisfaction with the services offered.

Unlike during the previous visit where mothers were being charged Ksh1,800 to deliver at Pumwani, all the interviewed patients were treated free of charge in line with free maternal care.

With previous concerns over possible baby swap at the facility, Sonko was also shown the strict security in the management of newborns where all infants and their mothers are fitted with identical baby name tags on their wrists.

The Governor also asked a mother who had delivered twins, a girl and a boy, to name them Margaret Kenyatta and Uhuru Kenyatta respectively.

"This is not PR. I am very happy, all the doctors are working. Services are running both in the operating theatre and the labour wards. This is what we want," Sonko stated.
