Oliver Mathenge Narrates How He Spent Sh80,000 on Alcohol

The Star journalist Oliver Mathenge on Tuesday narrated his journey with intriguing details about his past life as a drunkard.

Speaking to NTV, the revered journalist explained that the situation had grown so dire that he would even spend more than Ksh80,000 in one night.

“Even in the house, I would finish a bottle of whisky and then go somewhere to get more,” he stated.

Mathenge appeared on a men’s mental health segmented hosted by Sharon Mundia, a topic recognised as highly avoided by men.

The journalist further divulged that he could not talk about his situation at first because it caused violence in his home and that he even attempted suicide.

In the beginning, I couldn't talk about my past, the violence in my home, the suicide attempts and the things I had done to hurt other people

What I and other people did not realise was that there were other things behind this (alcoholism). When you are doing it, you don't realise you are messing up.” he continued.

He also explained that he had increasingly become sluggish at work while at the peak of his drunkenness, between 2016 and 2017, that he considered leaving the job on grounds that he didn't need it anymore.

His story inspired netizens who applauded his strong will to talk about how the condition affected him mentally and his ardent urge to stop the habit.

@OliverMathenge I agree with you that there is this thing I call the normalization of alcohol among the working class people as after work social time,” expressed @JAKADAWA.

Several dignitaries have also revealed about their drunken past including Chief Justice David Maraga who disclosed that he was introduced into the practice while still in high school.
