Media Council of Kenya’s Appeal After KTN Crew Stoned

Following the despicable attack on KTN journalists by students of St Stephen's Girls Secondary School in Machakos, the Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has adviced journalists to immediately report any cases of attack to the nearest police station.

In a statement to newsrooms, MCK’s Chief Executive Officer David Omwoyo condemned the attack urging the police to expedite investigations into the unfortunate incident and bring the culprits to book.

"While it is within the right of the school leadership to decline media interviews, it is against the law for anyone to incite and attack journalists who were in their line of duty," part of his statement read.

Earlier in the day three KTN journalists, Carolyne Bii (News reporter), Boniface Magana (Cameraman) and Immaculate Joseph (a driver) suffered injuries after the students reportedly attacked them following a directive from their principal, Charles Kioko.

The vehicle they were using was also torched by the students and their camera's destroyed.

The principal argued that the journalists wanted to malign the school's name and directed the students to harass them.

The journalists had reportedly gone to acquire information about a form two student who went missing since the first term.

The girl's mother narrated to KTN News that since her daughter resumed school from the half-term break, she had not heard from her.

She explained that when the term was almost coming to a close, she called the school to inquire the exact closing date but was shocked to learn that her daughter had not resumed school from the half term break.

According to her daughter's classmates, however, she had resumed classes but only stayed in school for two days, after which she was sent home for fees-related issues.
