A heroic driver saved lives on Thursday 5, 2019, after he jumped into a burning fuel tanker in Rwika Shopping Centre in Mbeere South, Embu County and steered it out of a petrol station.
The driver, James Mugo Kangara, was offloading petrol at the station when a fire started from beneath the tanker.
Mugo narrated that he tried to detach the pipes but the fire did not stop.
It is at this point that he decided to take the bull by its horns and drove the tanker away from the market as The Standard reports.
“I managed to drive the burning tanker away from the shops and residential houses and jumped out before the tanker burst into flames and was reduced to a shell,” he divulged.
Mugo also disclosed that he had ferried the fuel from Nairobi to the market.
Jane Njoki Kaina, the Area chief, called the police immediately after she was notified of the incident.
“There were no casualties or injuries. We laud the quick and selfless action of the driver for driving the burning tanker away from shops and residential houses and averting a disaster,” she stated.
On the other hand, Mbeere South Sub-County Police Commander, Ahmed Mohammed, stated that investigations into what caused the fire were underway.
