IEBC Meets Mariga Over Voter Register Hitch

Kibra Parliamentary hopeful McDonald Mariga's lawyers on Wednesday, September 11, afternoon met three officials from the IEBC at Anniversary Towers in Nairobi to iron out issues concerning his candidature.

The renowned football star was officially acting on the invalidation of his candidature in the Kibra by-election by the constituency's IEBC returning officer after his name was found missing in the voters' roll.

According to reports by The Star, the IEBC officials are seeking a legal interpretation of an advisory given to them by their internal lawyers over Mariga's candidature.

The Star on Wednesday, September 11, reported that Mariga filed a complaint with the IEBC's Dispute Resolution Committee following the decision which he described as improper.

Mariga wants the disputes committee to overturn the decision overturned as he insists he is a registered voter and that he was validly nominated.

The legendary footballer had rushed to beat the IEBC deadline to present his nomination certificate but was deemed unqualified, as the election body claimed that he was not a registered voter.

Mariga's lawyers, however, argued that the former footballer had dashed to Kariakor on August 26 where he registered as a voter, approximately two weeks after the National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi declared the seat vacant.

Personal registration as a voter is a pre-requisite for one to contest in the polls, as per the law of the land

The two groups are expected to make a public address after their meeting.
